FRESHMAN YEAR CHECKLIST

Welcome to your high school years! You will now be transitioning into the rigorous classes you'll be taking the next few years. Keep in mind that the classes you take now and the grades you earn are taken into account for your graduation and college admissions.

  • Meet with your counselor: Let them know what you may want to major in during college or what you want to do for your career. This way, your counselor can walk through your steps for the next 4 years.
  • Pick the right classes: Make sure you're familiar with the eSTEM 4 year plan and get an idea of what you're interested in taking. Ensure your course load is balanced -- we don't recommend too many honors/AP courses.
  • Extracurricular activities: Get involved with sports, clubs, leadership classes, volunteer work, internships, etc. to show that you are a well-rounded student. Do this during the year and over the summer. Try to pick a couple that you can commit to rather than being minimally involved in many.
  • CaliforniaColleges.edu: Utilize this website to plan out your next 4 years. There are so many resources available on this site, including a high school timeline, college information, financial aid, scholarships, career inventory, etc.
  • Remember!: Strive to earn a C or better. D grades are passing and will fulfill the graduation requirement but will not count for a-g college admissions requirements. If you earn D or F grades in core a-g classes, your counselor will work with you on summer school to repeat them.
